Designed in 1981 for the Berthold type foundry by Gustav Jaeger, Aja is a round-edged script typeface with roots in 19th-century, steel-nibbed penmanship. Although based on formal handwriting, Aja has a distinct informality resulting from its short descenders, simplified letter shapes, and looped capitals. This face works especially well for personal correspondence, neighborhood announcements, and other very informal work.
